Key result
Carotid endarterectomy with vein patch is linked to ~28% lower pulsatility index and smooth dilatation.
Why the study?
Invasive angiography is the gold standard for diagnosing carotid artery stenosis but carries risk, prompting the need for accurate noninvasive evaluation methods such as ultrasonography.
Does Power Doppler Imaging (PDI) improve the visualization of internal carotid artery stenosis compared to Color Doppler Flow Imaging (CDFI) and angiography?
Observational (n=12)
Yes
Does Power Doppler Imaging (PDI) improve the visualization of internal carotid artery stenosis compared to Color Doppler Flow Imaging (CDFI) and angiography?
Absolute Event Rate: 1.12% vs 1.55%
p-value: p=<0.01
Power Doppler Imaging provides superior visualization of internal carotid artery stenosis compared to Color Doppler Flow Imaging, particularly in complex calcified lesions.
Vein patch CEA was associated with improved carotid hemodynamics; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.

Agawa et al. (1998) conducted an observational in Carotid artery stenosis (n=12). Carotid endarterectomy with a vein patch vs. Preoperative baseline was evaluated on Pulsatility index (PI) (p=<0.01). Carotid endarterectomy with a vein patch significantly reduced the pulsatility index from 1.55 to 1.12 (p<0.01) and led to smooth dilatation of the treated artery with no continuous turbulent flow.
