Bilateral renal denervation selectively blunts thirst triggered by extracellular dehydration.
Why the study?
The role of renal nerves in the physiological response to different dipsogenic stimuli was unclear.

Renal denervation selectively attenuates extracellular thirst in rats; leaves open any role in human volume homeostasis.
Sharpe et al. (1978) studied Thirst challenges. Bilateral renal denervation vs. Intact renal nerves or beta-adrenergic blockade was evaluated on Water intake and urine volume. Bilateral renal denervation significantly attenuated the drinking response to an extracellular challenge (30% polyethylene glycol) but had no effect on intracellular challenge or water deprivation.
