High shear stress cuts endothelial DNA synthesis by ~73% and induces PDGF B mRNA expression.
Why the study?
The effects of shear stress on endothelial cell biological functions influencing vascular disease susceptibility were not fully understood.
Absolute Event Rate: 27% vs 100%
p-value: p=<0.001
High shear stress inhibits DNA synthesis and induces PDGF B mRNA expression in cultured endothelial cells, providing a potential mechanism for regional resistance to atherogenesis.

Supports shear stress modulation of regional intimal thickening; leaves open causal role and clinical translation in atherosclerosis.
Mitsumata et al. (1993) studied Atherosclerosis (Endothelial cell function). High shear stress vs. No shear stress (static control) was evaluated on DNA synthesis (3H-thymidine uptake) (p=<0.001). Exposure of bovine aortic endothelial cells to high shear stress (30 dyn/cm2) significantly decreased DNA synthesis to 27% of control (p<0.001) and induced PDGF B mRNA expression.
