Key result
Pediatric RFCA yields maximum skin radiation doses up to ~2.4 Gy.
Why the study?
Because RF catheter ablation procedures may be lengthy and are commonly performed in young patients, concern has arisen about radiation dose in this group of patients.
Design
Observational study measuring radiation doses during procedures

Skin dose variability in pediatric ablation warrants monitoring caution; leaves open prospective evaluation of long-term risks.
Observational (n=9)
Pediatric patients undergoing RF catheter ablation can receive significant radiation skin doses, highlighting the need to measure dose rates for individual equipment to establish procedural time limits.
Geise et al. (1996) conducted an observational in Tachycardia (n=9). Radiofrequency catheter ablation was evaluated on Skin dose rates and maximum skin doses. Radiofrequency catheter ablation in pediatric patients resulted in skin dose rates ranging from 6.2 to 49 mGy/min and maximum skin doses ranging from 0.09 to 2.35 Gy.
