Key result
Higher admission aldosterone linked to ~7% increased risk of severe Covid-19.
Why the study?
The role of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS) activation in the pathophysiology and clinical severity of Covid-19 was unclear.
Are plasmatic aldosterone and C-reactive protein levels associated with the clinical severity of Covid-19?
Comparison
Plasma renin and aldosterone levels and CRP levels compared by clinical severity
Design
Observational cohort study

Higher aldosterone may mark COVID-19 severity; small observational series leaves open any role for RAAS-targeted therapy.

Are plasmatic aldosterone and C-reactive protein levels associated with the clinical severity of Covid-19?
Odds Ratio: 1.07 (95% CI 1.01–1.14)
p-value: p=0.033
Elevated plasmatic aldosterone and C-reactive protein levels at admission are associated with a more severe clinical course in patients with Covid-19.
Villard et al. (2020) conducted an observational in Covid-19 (n=44). Plasma aldosterone and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels vs. Mild or moderate clinical course was evaluated on Severity of patients' clinical courses during hospitalization (severe defined as ordinal scale ≥ 5) (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.14, p=0.033). Higher plasmatic aldosterone (OR 1.07) and C-reactive protein (OR 1.11) levels at admission were significantly associated with a severe clinical course of Covid-19.
