Key result
ACE2 GGC haplotype linked to ~76% higher CHD risk in non-drinking males.
Why the study?
Few studies in human populations have investigated the relationship of ACE2 polymorphisms with coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction.
Are ACE2 gene polymorphisms associated with the risk of coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction in a Chinese population?
Population
811 CHD patients including 508 MI and 905 normal controls in a Chinese population
Comparison
ACE2 gene polymorphisms (1075A/G, 8790A/G, 16854G/C) vs normal controls

ACE2 variants were associated with MI in Chinese females and alcohol-interacting CHD/MI risk in males; leaves open clinical utility pending replication.
Case-Control (n=1,716)
Are ACE2 gene polymorphisms associated with the risk of coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction in a Chinese population?
Odds Ratio: 1.76 (95% CI 1.15–2.69)
p-value: p=0.007
Common genetic variants in the ACE2 gene are associated with myocardial infarction in females and interact with alcohol consumption to affect CHD and MI risk in Chinese males.
Yang et al. (2006) conducted a case-control in Coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction (n=1,716). ACE2 gene polymorphisms vs. Normal controls / common haplotype AAG was evaluated on CHD in male subjects not consuming alcohol (haplotype GGC vs AAG) (OR 1.76, 95% CI 1.15-2.69, p=0.007). ACE2 gene variants were associated with MI in females, and the GGC haplotype increased CHD risk in non-alcohol-consuming Chinese males (OR 1.76; 95% CI 1.15-2.69; P=0.007).
