BOLD MRI of calf muscles correlates strongly with microvascular perfusion metrics during ischemia and hyperemia.
Why the study?
The correlation of BOLD MR imaging of calf muscles with laser Doppler flowmetry and transcutaneous oxygen pressure measurements during ischemia and reactive hyperemia was not established.
Does BOLD MR imaging correlate with LDF and TcPo2 measurements during ischemia and reactive hyperemia in healthy volunteers?

Does BOLD MR imaging correlate with LDF and TcPo2 measurements during ischemia and reactive hyperemia in healthy volunteers?
BOLD MR imaging of calf muscles shows moderate to good correlation with established physiological measurements (LDF and TcPo2) during ischemia and reactive hyperemia, suggesting potential utility in evaluating peripheral arterial occlusive disease.

BOLD MR correlates moderately with LDF and TcPo2 in healthy calves; leaves open clinical validation for PAD assessment.
Ledermann et al. (2006) conducted an observational in Healthy volunteers (n=15). BOLD MR imaging vs. Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPo2) was evaluated on Correlation of BOLD MR signal intensity with LDF and TcPo2 time courses during ischemia and reactive hyperemia. BOLD MR imaging of calf muscles showed moderate to good correlation with LDF and TcPo2 measurements during ischemia (CCs 0.86 and 0.96) and reactive hyperemia (CCs 0.81 and 0.78).
