Key result
CT pulmonary angiography captures acute right ventricular strain and left ventricular compression in massive PE.
Why the study?
Secondary cardiac effects of massive pulmonary embolism on CT pulmonary angiography have not been previously described despite their diagnostic and prognostic importance.
Case Report (n=1)
CT pulmonary angiography can demonstrate secondary cardiac effects of massive pulmonary embolism, such as interventricular septal shift, which may carry prognostic and therapeutic implications.

May identify reversible cardiac compression on CTPA in massive PE; hypothesis-generating for imaging-guided thrombolysis.
Oliver et al. (1998) conducted a case report in Massive pulmonary embolism with acute right ventricular dysfunction (n=1). CT pulmonary angiography was evaluated on CT pulmonary angiogram appearances (right ventricular dilatation, interventricular septal shift, and compression of the left ventricle). CT pulmonary angiography demonstrated right ventricular dilatation, interventricular septal shift, and left ventricular compression in a patient with massive pulmonary embolism.
