Conservative monitoring successfully manages an incidental adult left atrial rhabdomyoma without tuberous sclerosis.
Why the study?
Primary benign cardiac tumors represent 75% of intracardiac masses, but rhabdomyomas are rare, representing less than 1%, and can occur in adults without family history of tuberous sclerosis.
Case Report (n=1)
No
Highlights the rare occurrence of an isolated left atrial rhabdomyoma in an adult without tuberous sclerosis, manageable with conservative follow-up.
Supports including rhabdomyoma in adult left atrial mass differentials without tuberous sclerosis; leaves open optimal surveillance strategies.
ABSTRACTPrimary benign cardiac tumors represent 75% of intracardiac masses including rhabdomyoma representing less than 1% with lymphangiomas and neurofibromas. Rhabdomyoma is a benign cardiac primary tumor made up of myocyte heart cells in the shape of a “spider”. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman with an incidental discovery of left atrium rhabdomyoma diagnosed by Doppler echocardiography confirmed by cardiac MRI revealing an intracardiac mass implanted on the posterolateral wall of the left atrium. by an elongated pedunculated base measuring 21.5x 10mm that is not very mobile with the blood flow of homogeneous aspect appearing iso-signal in SSFP, in iso-signal T2 STIR and not taking the contrast. Faced with the asymptomatic character, its size and the absence of repercussions, therapeutic abstention was proposed and regular remote control recommended. It is important to think of rhabdomyoma in front of an intracardiac mass despite adulthood and the absence of a family history of tuberous sclerosis.

Valérie et al. (2022) conducted a case report in Cardiac rhabdomyoma (n=1). Conservative management (therapeutic abstention) was evaluated. A rare left atrial cardiac rhabdomyoma was incidentally discovered in a 54-year-old woman without a history of tuberous sclerosis and was managed conservatively with regular monitoring.
