Key result
Low-dose atropine blunts phenylephrine-induced systolic blood pressure surge by ~39% in healthy adults.
Why the study?
The association between vagal cardiac function and blood pressure changes induced by hypertensive and hypotensive stimuli after low-dose atropine administration was unclear.
Absolute Event Rate: 11.1% vs 18.1%
p-value: p=<0.001
May blunt phenylephrine pressor effects in healthy subjects; leaves open relevance to clinical vasopressor management.

Kim et al. (2005) studied Healthy volunteers (n=15). Low-dose atropine vs. Before low-dose atropine administration was evaluated on Change in systolic blood pressure during acute hypertension induced by phenylephrine (p=<0.001). Low-dose atropine significantly attenuated the increase in systolic blood pressure during phenylephrine-induced acute hypertension in healthy awake subjects.
