Key result
Combined aortic and mitral balloon valvuloplasty doubles valve areas with sustained symptomatic improvement.
Why the study?
Combined severe aortic and mitral valve stenosis patients who refuse or are deferred from surgical valve replacement require alternative treatment options.

May support combined valvuloplasty in select dual-valve stenosis; leaves open need for randomized trials on durability and outcomes.
Berman et al. (1988) conducted a case report in Severe combined aortic and mitral valve stenosis (n=6). Combined aortic and mitral balloon valvuloplasty was evaluated on Aortic and mitral valve area and gradients. Combined aortic and mitral balloon valvuloplasty increased aortic valve area (0.5 to 0.9 cm2) and mitral valve area (0.7 to 1.5 cm2), with symptomatic improvement over 5.7 months.
