Key result
Higher exercise levels linked to ~11% lower arterial stiffness in Black adults.
Why the study?
Physical activity has been associated with lower arterial stiffness in largely White populations, but the types of activity required and applicability to Black adults remain unknown.
Population
378 Black adults without known CVD in Atlanta, GA and 55 Black adults in an independent cohort
Comparison
Higher versus lower levels of sport/exercise and home/life physical activities
Design
Cohort study with multiple linear regression analysis and validation in independent cohort

May inform activity guidance for Black adults; extends prior observations but remains hypothesis-generating pending trials.
Cohort (n=433)
Absolute Event Rate: 6.92% vs 7.75%
p-value: p=<0.001
Baltrus et al. (2021) conducted a cohort in Arterial stiffness in Black adults without known CVD (n=433). Higher levels of sport/exercise and home/life-related physical activities vs. Lowest quartile of physical activity was evaluated on Arterial stiffness measured as pulse wave velocity (PWV) (p=<0.001). Higher levels of sport/exercise were associated with lower arterial stiffness compared to the lowest quartile (PWV 6.92 vs 7.75, p<0.001) among Black adults without known cardiovascular disease.
