Effective lipid-lowering therapy prevents recurrent pancreatitis, while poor control links to fatal ischemic heart disease.
Why the study?
The relationship between hypertriglyceridemia, acute pancreatitis, and ischemic heart disease in patients with hyperlipoproteinemia type V was unclear.

May support intensive lipid-lowering in familial hyperlipidemia with pancreatitis; leaves open generalizability beyond this twin pair.
Lithell et al. (1987) conducted a case report in Hyperlipoproteinemia type V (n=2). Lipid-lowering therapy was evaluated. Successful lipid-lowering therapy resolved recurrent pancreatitis in one twin over 13 years, while less successful treatment in his brother resulted in death from ischemic heart disease at 9 years.
