Key result
Cardiac injury in hospitalized COVID-19 patients is linked to ~4-fold higher all-cause mortality.
Why the study?
A significant proportion of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 experience cardiac injury diagnosed by abnormal troponin levels, but predisposing and protective factors and outcomes remain to be clarified.
Observational (n=750)
Yes
May flag higher-risk COVID-19 inpatients for closer monitoring; leaves open whether targeted interventions improve survival.

Melillo et al. (2021) conducted an observational in COVID-19 pneumonia (n=750). COVID-19 pneumonia was evaluated on Occurrence of cardiac injury (CI) during hospitalization. In hospitalized COVID-19 patients, cardiac injury occurred in 52% and was associated with higher all-cause mortality than in those without cardiac injury (40.0% vs. 9.1%, P=0.001).
