Key result
Primate tissue cultures propagate ~71% of Group A Coxsackie virus serotypes, led by human amnion.
Why the study?
A method was needed for assay of poliomyelitis virus or antibody using suspended HeLa cells and phenol red pH indicator to detect virus infection or neutralization.

Human amnion cell cultures enable Group A Coxsackie virus propagation; leaves open clinical or diagnostic applications pending further validation.
BRUNNER et al. (1955) studied Group A Coxsackie viruses. Tissue culture propagation (mammalian cells) was evaluated on Development of cytopathogenic effect (CPE) in tissue culture. Of 24 Group A Coxsackie virus serotypes tested, 17 were successfully propagated and produced cytopathogenic effects in primate tissue cultures, most notably in primary human amnion cells.
