Elastic aortic arch model reveals descending aorta reverse flow and ~5.4 m/s pulse wave velocity.
Why the study?
Hemodynamic influences on atherosclerosis in the human aortic arch require further study using models with realistic compliance and flow conditions.

Elastic aortic arch models enable pulsatile flow mapping; leaves open whether findings predict human plaque sites or alter practice.
Liepsch et al. (1992) studied Hemodynamic influences on atherosclerosis. Steady and pulsatile flow in an elastic silicone rubber model of a human aortic arch was evaluated on Velocity measurements, Reynolds numbers, and secondary flow behavior. Laser-Doppler-velocity measurements in an elastic human aortic arch model revealed reverse flows along the inner radius of the descending aorta and a pulse wave velocity of 5.4 m/sec.
