Solutions of anhydrous HF and SO2 and electrolytes in anhydrous HF have been studied by n.m.r. Both 1H and l9F chemical shifts were studied as a function of concentration and temperature. The dimerization constant and the enthalpy of the reaction [Formula: see text] were calculated. The results for electrolyte solutions were interpreted on the basis of two effects, ionization and the H-bond breaking effect. A linear relationship exists between δ0, the molal chemical shft, and the ionic crystallographic radii. A temperature effect was also observed and interpreted. Solutions of salts of Lewis acids were also studied but results are less conclusive; it was shown, however, that their δ0 values are smaller than those of alkali fluorides.
