The concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has increased due to anthropogenic emissions. Numerous studies have demonstrated that microalgae cultivation is highly efficient for nutrient removal and CO2 absorption. This review integrates current knowledge on microalgae-based technologies, highlighting their mechanisms of CO2 sequestration, associated advantages, and the environmental and operational factors influencing their efficiency. Feasibility assessments for coupling microalgae cultivation with biogas production are discussed, along with potential challenges in practical engineering applications. By synthesizing recent advances and identifying research gaps, this review aims to provide a valuable reference for researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to advance the implementation of microalgae-based biogas technologies.
