Serum renin activity (SRA) was measured in 7 pregnant normotensive females on an unrestricted sodium intake and on a low sodium diet (10 mEq/day). All pregnant subjects showed significantly elevated levels of SRA, which were further increased with assumption of the upright posture and institution of a low sodium intake. This response was similar to that of normal subjects. These observations are consistent with a maternal renal origin for the elevation of SRA in normal pregnancy.
