The author developed a smartphone-based measurement system to provide an affordable and user-friendly solution for monitoring seismic isolation layer during earthquakes. This system tracks the relative displacement between the foundation and the isolation platform using motion capture with the smartphone’s built-in camera and measures the platform’s absolute acceleration using its integrated accelerometer. Shaking table tests conducted in both one- and two-directional configurations demonstrated that the system can accurately monitor the behavior of seismic isolation layer during moderate to large earthquakes.
