Traditional electromagnetism establishes the electromagnetic wave theory based on Maxwell’s hypothesis of mutual excitation of fields in vacuum, and classifies light as electromagnetic wave. Meanwhile, the conclusion that “the Lorentz force never does work”, which is derived under the condition of isolated free electrons in vacuum, is generalized as a universal law. This brings a series of contradictions in the underlying mechanisms of electromagnetism and optics. Taking engineering phenomena such as parallelplate capacitors, transformers, current clamps and electric motors as empirical evidence, this paper carries out systematic deduction on the underlying mechanism of electromagnetic interaction. This paper points out that the physical hypothesis of mutual excitation of electric and magnetic fields in vacuum cannot hold true, and there is no selfsustained propagating entity of electromagnetic wave in vacuum. “The Lorentz force does no work” is only a conclusion under specific conditions and cannot serve as a universal physical law. Light and electromagnetic interactions belong to different physical systems, and light is not an electromagnetic wave. This paper reconstructs the underlying operating mechanism of electromagnetic interactions, and provides references for reflection and revision of fundamental electromagnetic and optical theories.
