The flipped classroom relocates didactic content before class so that synchronous time can be used for supervised application. Team-based learning (TBL) is one comprehensive flipped classroom model, supplying design-element language that can strengthen flipped classroom learning more broadly. We show how Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) can inform the design of flipped classroom teaching across postgraduate health professions education, where heterogeneous prior knowledge, competing professional demands, and professional hierarchies create distinct design challenges. CLT distinguishes extraneous load from intrinsic load, while germane load is the working memory devoted to a task’s intrinsic demands, supporting schema formation and automation. We present twelve evidence-informed, practical tips organized across three phases of the flipped cycle, each phase targeting the load type it most affects and each tip mapped to the design decision it governs. Together they constitute an actionable framework for designing cognitively optimized, collaborative learning for busy clinicians in training and practice.
