This interview is a part of the “Punjabi in BC” oral history project (2019-2023). “Punjabi in BC” is comprised of interviews with over 50 K-12 teachers, language advocates, journalists, and writers who have contributed to the life of the Punjabi language in British Columbia, Canada. The subject of this interview is Jarnail Singh Sekha, born in the Moga district of Indian Punjab to farmer parents. Passionate about writing from a young age, Sekha was encouraged by novelist Sardar Jaswant Singh Kanwal. After moving to Canada and facing job struggles, he wrote stories reflecting his experiences. His works cover many important topics like illegal immigration, family feuds, gang wars, and drugs. This interview is divided into two segments and includes two promotional videos. In the interview, Jarnail Singh Sekha talks about his immigration experience, the encouragement he received to teach Punjabi, the importance of learning Punjabi, his writing process, and the books he has written.
