Field school uncovers everyday life and campus changes in Lexington's historic neighborhoods, indicating local heritage implications.
The 2022 University of Kentucky Campus Archaeology Project was the first on-campus field school offered at the university. The site (218 E Maxwell) is on the northern periphery of main campus. The house was a private residence for decades prior to its integration into campus in the late 20th century and sat at the northern border of campus between a historical African American neighborhood (Adamstown) and the historic downtown districts of Lexington, KY. The project investigates the transformation of the campus footprint in Lexington and the everyday materiality of a turn of the century Lexingtonian household.
