Key result
BAV relatives with trileaflet valves exhibit altered aortic shapes in ~38% of cases and increased aortic vortex flow.
Why the study?
Does being a relative of a patient with bicuspid aortic valve alter aortic shape and blood flow patterns in individuals with trileaflet aortic valves?
Observational (n=39)
Does being a relative of a patient with bicuspid aortic valve alter aortic shape and blood flow patterns in individuals with trileaflet aortic valves?
Absolute Event Rate: 1.5% vs 0.6%
p-value: p=0.015
BAV relatives with trileaflet valves exhibit altered aortic shape and increased vortex flow, suggesting a heritable component of BAV-related aortopathy independent of valve morphology.

May warrant aortic evaluation in BAV relatives with trileaflet valves; leaves open prognostic value of vortex flow.
Schnell et al. (2016) conducted an observational in Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) relatives (n=39). BAV relative status vs. Healthy controls was evaluated on Ascending aorta (AAo) vortex flow grading (p=0.015). BAV relatives with trileaflet valves exhibited altered aortic shapes (38% vs 7% cubic/gothic) and increased ascending aorta vortex flow (grading 1.5 vs 0.6, P=0.015) compared with healthy controls.
