6-week-old Dahl salt-sensitive hypertensive (DS) rats fed an 8% NaCl diet, n=16, plus 8 Dahl salt-resistant control rats (total n=24).

Intervention

Benidipine 1 mg/kg/day (subdepressor dose) administered for 5 weeks.

Comparator

Vehicle administered for 5 weeks (DS rats) and age-matched Dahl salt-resistant rats fed the same diet.

Outcome

Expression of preproET-1, ETAR, and TGF-beta1 in the left ventricle, and myocardial remodeling (wall-to-lumen ratio, perivascular fibrosis, myocardial fibrosis).surrogate

Benidipine ameliorates myocardial remodeling and left ventricular hypertrophy in salt-sensitive hypertensive rats independently of blood pressure lowering, partly by decreasing ET-1 and TGF-beta1 expression.
