Key result
Depression plus high glutathione peroxidase linked to ~11x greater odds of recurrent stable CHD.
Why the study?
The study was conducted to clarify the relationship between oxidative stress levels, depression, and the risk of recurrence of stable coronary heart disease.
Case-Control (n=174)
No
Effect estimate: OR 10.61
p-value: p=0.03
High levels of the antioxidant enzyme GPx, particularly in combination with depression, are significantly associated with an increased risk of recurrent stable coronary heart disease.
Depression with high GPx was associated with recurrent stable CHD; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective confirmation before clinical consideration.

Ivaščenko et al. (2021) conducted a case-control in Stable coronary heart disease (n=174). Depression and high glutathione peroxidase (GPx) vs. No depression and normal GPx was evaluated on Recurrent stable coronary heart disease (OR 10.61, p=0.03). Patients with both depression and high glutathione peroxidase levels had 10.6 times higher odds of recurrent stable coronary heart disease compared to those without depression and normal levels.
