Population

44 Lewis rats with a proximal left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) ligation model of myocardial infarction.

Intervention

Combined therapy of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (10^6 cells) and HVJ-liposomes bearing the human hepatocyte growth factor (hHGF) gene injected into the myocardial infarction scar area 2 weeks post-ligation.

Comparator

Culture medium injected into the scar area (n=13), as well as single-therapy groups receiving only cardiomyocytes (n=11) or only hHGF gene (n=10).

Outcome

Cardiac performance assessed by echocardiography at 4 and 8 weeks after injection.surrogate

Combined hHGF gene transfection and cellular cardiomyoplasty significantly improves cardiac performance, perfusion, and structural integration in a rat model of post-MI heart failure.
