L-glutamine improves LV dP/dt max and boosts myocardial O-GlcNAc levels in ischemic rat hearts.
Why the study?
The cardioprotective effects of l-glutamine administered both before and during early reperfusion had not been investigated.
Does l-glutamine administered before and after ischemia improve hemodynamics in an ischemic rat heart model?

Hypothesis-generating for l-glutamine in rat stunned myocardium; human trials needed before any clinical consideration.
Kawakami et al. (2024) conducted an RCT in myocardial ischemia (n=18). l-glutamine vs. Krebs-Henseleit buffer (Control) or glutamine during reperfusion only (Post-Gln) was evaluated on Maximum left ventricular derivative of pressure development (LV dP/dt max) and myocardial O-GlcNAc levels (p=< 0.01). Pre- and post-ischemic administration of l-glutamine significantly improved LV dP/dt max and increased myocardial O-GlcNAc levels (P<0.01 vs. control) in a rat heart model.
