Smjernice Europskoga kardiolokog drutva (ECS) za zatajivanje srca (HF) iz 2016. godine stavile su u prvi plan nove preporuke za lijeenje HF-a sa snienom istisnom frakcijom (HFrEF; EF < 40 %). Uveden je novi pojam: HF s umjereno snienom istisnom frakcijom (HFmrEF) za prije opisivanu "sivu zonu" u podruju istisne frakcije 40 -49 %. Smjernice istiu i dalje prisutan nedostatak terapijskih mogunosti zasnovanih na dokazima za HFmrEF i HF s ouvanom istisnom frakcijom (HFpEF, EF 50 %). Uvodi se koncept rane intervencije kod akutnog HF-a (AHF). Ovdje su saeti podatci od jeseni 2016. do jeseni 2017. godine kojima su analizirani implementacija i koritenje postojeim terapijskim opcijama dokazano djelotvornima kod HFrEF-a, dodatna istraivanja koja su imala neutralne rezultate u HFpEF-u, ali s detaljnom karakterizacijom i potencijalnim terapijskim koristima u HFmrEF-u, razoaravajui rezultati istraivanja u AHF-u te rastui broj dokaza o koristima lijeenja komorbiditeta.
