The oxynitride phosphor BaAlSi5N7O2:Eu2+ was synthesized by using a modified solid-state reaction method with Ba2SiO4:Eu2+ as the precursor. This synthesized product was found to be well-crystallized by utilizing XRD characterization. Under 300 nm excitation, BaAlSi5N7O2:Eu2+ shows an emission band extending from 400 to 650 nm with a main peak at about 515 nm. After irradiation under the 254 nm UV light, the afterglow emission of Eu2+ (4f65d → 4f7) can be obviously observed for at least 40 min in the limit of light perception of dark-adapted human eyes (0.32 mcd/m2).
