Does alcohol restriction alter morning and evening home blood pressure in men with essential hypertension?
Alcohol consumption exerts a biphasic effect on blood pressure in hypertensive men, significantly increasing morning BP while decreasing evening BP.
Kawano et al. (2002) conducted an RCT in Essential hypertension (n=30). Regular alcohol consumption vs. Alcohol restriction (10.2 +/- 1.9 ml/day) was evaluated on Morning and late evening home blood pressure. Regular alcohol consumption in hypertensive men increased morning blood pressure by 4.4/2.9 mmHg but decreased evening blood pressure by 7.4/5.7 mmHg.
