Why the study?

The study was conducted to investigate the relationship between systolic and diastolic myocardial functions and NT-proBNP levels in chronic coronary syndrome with concomitant type 2 diabetes mellitus according to the degree of coronary artery involvement.

Population

95 patients with exertional angina undergoing coronary angiography

Comparison

Type 2 diabetes mellitus vs no type 2 diabetes mellitus

Overview

May link NT-proBNP to early remodeling in CCS with T2DM; hypothesis-generating, needs prospective validation before practice change.

Structured PICO

P
Population
95 patients with chronic coronary syndrome (exertional angina FC III, CHF stage C with preserved or moderately reduced LVEF, NYHA II-III) who underwent coronary angiography. 60 had concomitant compensated type 2 diabetes mellitus, 35 did not. A control group of 15 healthy individuals was also included.
C
Comparator
Patients with chronic coronary syndrome without type 2 diabetes mellitus
O
Outcome
Structural and functional changes of the myocardium (left atrial size, left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, ejection fraction, E/A ratio, global longitudinal strain) and NT-proBNP levelssurrogate

In patients with chronic coronary syndrome, concomitant type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with more severe multivessel coronary disease, worse myocardial remodeling, and higher NT-proBNP levels.
