Implication

Animal data suggest rhenium irradiation reduces neointima without vasomotor impairment; leaves open clinical applicability in humans.

Structured PICO

Does intracoronary irradiation with 186/188 Rhenium following balloon injury reduce neointima without impairing vasoreactivity in porcine coronary arteries?

P
Population
20 swine. Subgroups include: no injury/no radiation (n=6 animals, 12 arteries); balloon overstretch injury followed by radiation (n=8 animals, 15 arteries); and balloon overstretch injury without radiation (n=3 animals, 6 arteries).
I
Intervention
Intracoronary irradiation with 186/188 Rhenium at a dose of 15 Gy following balloon overstretch injury in the left anterior descending (LAD) and left circumflex (LCX) arteries.
C
Comparator
Balloon overstretch injury without radiation, and no injury/no radiation.
O
Outcome
Vasomotor response to acetylcholine (endothelium-dependent) and nitroglycerin (endothelium-independent), and neointimal proliferation (intimal area and intimal area corrected for fracture length) at 2 weeks.surrogate

Intracoronary irradiation with 186/188 Rhenium effectively reduces neointimal formation without impairing endothelial or smooth muscle vasomotor function in a porcine model of balloon injury.
