Hemodynamic measurements evaluated resting arterial pressure, cardiovascular responses to acute stress, resistance vessel wall-to-lumen architecture, and left ventricular hypertrophy.
Early treatment maintained arterial pressure at prehypertensive levels, modified stress responses, prevented resistance vessel structural thickening, and resulted in a delayed, modest pressure rise after discontinuation.
Late treatment of established hypertension did not alter resting arterial pressure, produced only modest vascular regression with a largely preserved increase in wall-to-lumen ratio, and had negligible effect on cardiac hypertrophy.
Left ventricular hypertrophy proved far less responsive to beta-blocker intervention than resistance vessel remodeling across both early preventive and late therapeutic regimens.
