Population

440 subjects (246 essential hypertension [EH] patients and 194 age-, gender-, and BMI-matched healthy controls) from a Chinese Han population. EH defined as BP ≥140/90 mmHg or taking antihypertensives. Excluded: secondary hypertension, diabetes mellitus, valvular disease, apparent ischemic heart disease.

Intervention

Presence of the ACE 2350 G/A polymorphism (A allele / GA+AA genotypes)

Comparator

Absence of the ACE 2350 G/A polymorphism (GG genotype) and healthy normotensive controls

Outcome

Association of the ACE 2350 G/A polymorphism with essential hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH)surrogate

The ACE 2350 G/A polymorphism is independently associated with left ventricular hypertrophy, but not essential hypertension, in a Chinese Han population.
