Overview

Informs real-world VTE care across diverse settings; extends trial evidence to underrepresented subgroups.

Key Points

  • To outline the rationale, design, and methodological framework of the RIETE registry for evaluating contemporary clinical presentation, care patterns, and outcomes of venous thromboembolism.
  • Ongoing prospective multinational registry initiated in Spain in 2001, spanning 179 centres across 24 countries.
  • Enrolls patients with venous thromboembolism (N>72,000), including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, cerebral vein thrombosis, and splanchnic vein thrombosis.
  • Collects long-term outcomes and serves as an infrastructure for pragmatic comparative effectiveness studies and randomized clinical trials.
  • Provides systematic observational evidence on presentation patterns, treatment strategies, and clinical outcomes for underrepresented populations, including the elderly, pregnant individuals, and patients with recent bleeding or hemodynamic instability.
  • Broadened scope to capture extended follow-up and unusual thrombotic presentations while facilitating multinational collaborative research platforms.

Structured PICO

P
Population
72,107 adults with objectively confirmed acute symptomatic or asymptomatic venous thromboembolism (DVT, PE, or both), as well as other thrombotic conditions (superficial vein thrombosis, splanchnic vein thrombosis, retinal vein thrombosis, cerebral vein thrombosis). Mean age 65.4, 49.1% male. Multinational (179 centres in 24 countries).
O
Outcome
Main outcomes of interest include all-cause death, PE-specific death, recurrent DVT, recurrent PE, major bleeding, clinically relevant non-major bleeding, arterial ischemic events, thrombocytopenia, bone fractures, post-thrombotic syndrome, and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

RIETE is a large, ongoing, multinational registry that provides comprehensive real-world data on the presentation, management, and outcomes of patients with venous thromboembolism, including underrepresented subgroups.
