The melt flow rate from a nozzle is calculated in the formation of amorphous and polycrystalline ribbon, as a function of the nozzle height in the crucible and the excess pressure on the melt. The optimal flow rate (2–4 m/s) does not depend on the crucible dimensions in laboratory and industrial equipment. The excess pressure has a greater influence than the height of the melt column on the flow rate. The excess pressure and height of the melt column corresponding to thickness variation no greater than 1–3 μm over the length of the ribbon are determined. This permits increase in productivity of small-scale units by a factor of 1.5–2.
