A detailed description is given of an apparatus to measure magnetic susceptibilities of small quantities (about 10 mg) of para- and ferromagnetic substances. Special attention is paid to the construction of a low and a high temperature thermostat of such dimensions as to ensure easy handling in a pole gap not wider than 16 mm. Pre-treatment of the sample, as for instance degassing, reduction, oxidation and high temperature structural changes can be performed in situ. The range of susceptibilities covered is + 5 × 10 -6 to + 1 000 × 10 -6 e.m.u. The accuracy varies between 1 and 2% depending on the magnitude of the susceptibility.
