The spectrum of a low intensity unstable source is repeatedly scanned through a selected wavelength range by a monochromator whose prism is rotated by a stepping motor driven from a logic circuit. This circuit also addresses the output pulses from a photomultiplier attached to the monochromator into a 400 channel analyser. Each channel of the analyser corresponds to a selected wavelength interval and the number of pulse counts in any channel accumulates during each scan. A typical spectrum is shown.
