A high-pressure absorption cell, designed to give sample pressure up to 50 kb at 90°K, and allowing sufficient transmission of radiation for infra-red absorption spectra to be recorded with a resolution of 1 cm -1 , is described. This cell has been working for the past four years to the above specification in the near infra-red region of the spectrum. It has also been used in other spectral regions (400-50 000 cm -1 ), and at other temperatures (77-400°K), and has permitted good spectra of slightly lower resolution to be obtained under these less favourable conditions.
