Challenges assumption that fetal GH hypersecretion stems from pituitary GRF hypersensitivity; leaves open hypothalamic or other regulatory factors.
In vitro, neonatal ovine pituitary cells show a greater GH response to GRF and greater sensitivity to SRIF compared to fetal cells, suggesting that the higher in vivo GH response in fetuses is not due to inherently increased pituitary sensitivity to GRF.
