Why the study?
Does enflurane anesthesia cause nonoliguric renal failure in patients undergoing surgery?
Does enflurane anesthesia cause nonoliguric renal failure in patients undergoing surgery?
This case report alerts clinicians to the potential nephrotoxicity (nonoliguric renal failure) of enflurane anesthesia.
May signal enflurane nephrotoxicity risk in surgery; hypothesis-generating and leaves causality open.

This nephrotoxicity is related to the dose of inorganic fluoride (2). Although the metabolism of enflurane (Ethrane®*), yields less inorganic fluoride, enflurane has caused renal dysfunction in animals (3). A recent report implicated enflurane in deterioration of renal function in a transplant patient undergoing surgery (4). The following case report may represent a second occurrence and is being communicated to alert internists to potential nephrotoxicity of this anesthetic.A 42-year-old woman was admitted for elective ankle fusion. Known medical problems included chronic...References1. CRANDELLPAPPASMACDONALD WSA: Nephrotoxicity associated with methoxyflurane anesthesia.
