Key result
The abstract is truncated and does not report the quantitative results or key findings regarding risk factors for sudden cardiac death in patients with advanced HFpEF.
Why the study?
Clinical trial data on sudden cardiac death may not represent community patients with HFpEF, and data on its epidemiology and risk factors are lacking.
Cohort (n=532)
No
SCD comprises fewer deaths in community advanced HFpEF than trials; leaves open whether RV dysfunction or comorbidities identify ICD candidates.
heart failure preserved ejection fraction; sudden cardiac death Sudden cardiac death (SCD) has been estimated to cause approximately 25% of deaths in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in adjudicated clinical trials. 1 However, these results may not adequately represent community patients with HFpEF, given selection biases inherent to clinical trial enrollment.Data on the epidemiology and risk factors for SCD in HFpEF are currently lacking. This was a population-based retrospective cohort study of all residents of Olmsted County Minnesota with advanced HFpEF (EF ≥50%) between 2007 and 2017.Advanced HFpEF was defined as per 2018 European Society of Cardiology criteria. 2Age at advanced HFpEF diagnosis, coronary artery disease (CAD), Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), right ventricular (RV) dysfunction, and death were determined as previously described. 3hart review was performed for SCD, defined as in-hospital ventricular tachyarrhythmia requiring defibrillation, witnessed out-of-hospital collapse, unwitnessed death within 1 week of personal/medical contact, appropriate implantable defibrillator shock, or unwitnessed death with autopsy cause of death consistent with arrhythmia.Patients were excluded if cause of death could not be determined.Risk factors for SCD present at advanced HF diagnosis were examined using Cox proportional-hazards regression models. The Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board approved this study. The data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.Among 532 patients, mean age at advanced HFpEF diagnosis was 79.0 (standard deviation [SD] 13.1) years-old, 229 (43.1%) were male, median CCI was 5 (interquartile range

Suen et al. (2024) conducted a cohort in Advanced heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) (n=532). Risk factors for sudden cardiac death was evaluated on Sudden cardiac death (SCD). The abstract is truncated and does not report the quantitative results or key findings regarding risk factors for sudden cardiac death in patients with advanced HFpEF.
