A machine for measuring the shear strengths of metal-metal adhesive joints in the temperature range 20-350°C is described, in which a steadily increasing torsional load is applied to the joint (a butt-joint between two cylinders) and the load is measured using a torsion bar. Precautions have been taken to ensure that no peeling or bending stresses are involved and that the sample is evenly heated. Two methods of constructing suitable adhesive joints are described and details of tests conducted with a commercially available epoxy adhesive are given.
