Implication

Acute BP normalization after unclipping occurs independently of natriuresis; leaves open non-volume mechanisms for study in renovascular hypertension.

Structured PICO

P
Population
Renal hypertensive rats (one-clip, two-kidney model) induced by application of a clip with an internal diameter of 0.20 mm or 0.25 mm
I
Intervention
Removal of the renal artery clip after 1, 2, or 3 weeks
C
Comparator
Sham-operated renal hypertensive rats and sham-operated normotensive control rats
O
Outcome
Blood pressure, plasma renin activity, and excretion of water, sodium, and potassium at 24 hours post-unclippingsurrogate

In a one-clip, two-kidney hypertensive rat model, the acute reversal of hypertension after unclipping is not primarily driven by urinary loss of water or sodium, and is only partly explained by decreased plasma renin activity.
