The shielding of certain tissues when the body is exposed to nearly omni-directional γ-radiation has been investigated by measurements in a model, using γ-rays from the nuclides 131 I, 226 Ra and 24 Na. The attenuation factors for the testes and ovary are shown to be in accord with previous measurements with natural γ-radiation and with theoretical calculations by other workers. It has been possible to deduce the mean attenuation factor for the total active bone marrow over the photon energy range 0·2 to 2·0 MeV.
