Polarized absorption spectra of small crystals, such as rock-forming silicate minerals, may be measured with a polarizing microscope equipped with a universal stage attachment, which is mounted in a spectrophotometer. The three-axis universal stage enables crystals to be orientated accurately, and the polarizing microscope provides a convenient method for transmitting polarized light through small crystals. The microscope technique is described, and illustrated by results obtained of polarized absorption spectra of fayalite.
