Field survey reveals no cultural resources within an archaeological boundary, indicating undisturbed precontact heritage following emergency excavation.
This document is a letter report describing archaeological survey following emergency water line repairs completed in the vicinity of El Rancho and Umbra roads on Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB), California. On Saturday, 22 August 2026, American Water found and repaired a water leak in a relatively undeveloped area near El Rancho Road. Upon review by VSFB cultural resources staff it was found that the valve repair took place within the boundary of archaeological site CA-SBA-1060. On Wednesday, 25 August 2026 an intensive-level archaeological field survey was conducted by a VSFB archaeologist. 4. No evidence of precontact Chumash occupation, such as chipped stone, ground stone, or shell midden were found during survey and inspection of the repair work location.
