The three basic designs of compression apparatus which can be used in conjunction with an Instron testing machine are considered and assessed in general terms. The construction and operation of two compression jigs, based on one of these designs, for operation in the temperature ranges -196 °C to 250 °C and room temperature to 1800 °C, respectively, are then described.
